How do you choose a reliable private investigator for investigating disinformation?
Disinformation is a broad term with a variety of meanings for people. With 43 years of experience, here are the different types our agency has encountered:
1.) Personal slander or defamation.
2.) Online smear campaigns.
3.) Corporate Sabatoge.
Candidly, this is not a matter we will accept. There are three reasons:
1.) Not in our wheelhouse of expertise.
2.) We have found that, even given our pedigree, the entities that have been unknowingly used to spread the lies just won’t cooperate with anyone other than the victim.
3.) Given the Privacy Laws, etc., the stark reality that most PIs won’t tell you is that you unfortunately have to take the lead on these matters. Indeed, we can give you a few tips below, but you will find they want you to take the lead at every turn versus a specialist. Even if you authorize a person to be your representative, they will not generally cooperate with those you have solicited to assist.
So, to answer the question, how do you choose a PI to investigate disinformation? Do your homework and find someone with experience in digital forensics, online reputation, and misinformation campaigns. Be patient; the club is small.
We have found that “reputation repair” companies do little to help. You are better served to consult with forensic analysis personnel, attorneys and cyber security experts. Even given these pros, be mindful of our admonition above about you, the victim, carrying the load to undo the damage."
