Where can I hire a private investigator online in the US?
The days of looking in the Yellow Pages for a private investigator have long passed. However, referrals can still work as long as they are not from unreliable sources.
Hiring a PI online is easy and straightforward, but some cautionary guidelines exist. Use the following tips to select a reputable and experienced investigator to handle your matter:
1.) A well-established agency will have a detailed website outlining all their services. If you are looking for a background check and that service is not listed, then move on to another company. The most glaring offense is “electronic eavesdropping detection services” or bug sweeps, as the public knows these subject matter. Over 97% of investigators do not offer this service until you call. They are the “fakers and pretenders” in our industry. There is no website reference to “debugging,” and they will always undercut the going rate of the professionals. They show up with a “magic wand” from Radio Shack and fake the sweep by doing a little dance in your kitchen. Beware.
2.) Google reviews are an excellent standard, as they can’t be faked or purchased. It is difficult to get reviews, and it is understandable. Who wants to provide a 5-star review to a PI who has helped them catch their mate cheating or assisting in a criminal trial?
3.) We are not big fans of Specialized Directories. We will not name them for civil reasons but simply advise that there is no clear-cut evidence to delineate one agency from another. Those who pay higher fees get better placement.
4.) Most attorneys know the top-eschelon investigators in their area. If you know one, call them for a referral. Many attorneys have networking associations that they can ask, “Need a civil/criminal private investigator with a minimum of 10 years’ experience. Who do you recommend?”
5.) One of the best tips in your local courthouse. Go for half an hour and speak with the clerks, bailiffs, and other court personnel. Simply ask, “Who are the best PIs you see working in the courthouse?”
6.) Call your local law enforcement agency and ask if they know any well-known, highly regarded retired officers who now practice as private investigators.
7.) Before a final decision, ensure the agency is duly licensed in their state.
8.) Check the license's effective date. Many investigators claim to have been in business for 25 years, but their licenses are only two years old.
9.) Make sure the website has numerous testimonials from various clients. These are different from Google reviews and are a great indicator of the company that the PI keeps.
10.) In making your final decision, ask the investigator three questions: What is the investigator’s plan, how long will it take, and how much will it cost?
