Understanding vehicle tracking devices
GPS tracking devices use a network of satellites orbiting the earth to approximate location data which they then relay to a server or store in their own memory to be downloaded later. The first kind of trackers offer real-time location data while the latter allows for passive monitoring only.
Depending on the installation method, a tracker can be a simple self-contained portable device, a plug-and-play spotter, or a hardwired locator. A plug-and-play spotter attaches to the vehicle’s onboard diagnostics port, while a hardwired device requires the use of the vehicle’s electrical system.
On the other hand, a self-contained portable device has a battery built-in and can be hidden inside or under the vehicle making it hard to detect by the average person.
Simple self-contained portable spotters are popular because they are easier to hide. Active battery-powered GPS spotters will start to transmit signals as soon as they detect that the vehicle is in motion, then pause transmission after several minutes of inactivity.
Why would someone put a tracker on my car?
There are several reasons why someone might sneak a geo-tag device into your car without your say-so. It is a device that can be easily and affordably purchased online for as low as $20.
The purpose of a vehicle tracking device is to keep an eye on people and possessions that mean the most to you. However, a device intended to provide peace of mind can also be used against you, including:
- Spying. We are talking about jealous partners, competitors, and even friends and family who want to keep track of your movements at all times.
- Stalking. We are talking about someone who uses a GPS spotter to follow you wherever you go with the intention of harassing, controlling, or offering unrequited love.
- Theft recovery. Some vehicle businesses or individuals might install spotters on their vehicles for theft recovery purposes. However, they should get your say-so first.
- Private investigator. If someone hires a private detective to investigate you for one reason or the other, the detective might use a GPS spotter with legal authorization to track your movements.

How to find tracker on car
A self-contained portable GPS tracking device can be hard to discover. That’s because it doesn’t need to use a vehicle’s onboard diagnostics (OBD-II) port or electrical system. That being said, there are popular spots to check. Some of the methods to check for trackers include:
- Physical inspection. This involves checking every inch of a vehicle, from the dashboard to the undercarriage.
- Electronic bug sweep. This involves using smartphone apps, voice-enabled radio frequency detectors and advanced spectrum analyzers that reveal all low radio frequencies in your vicinity.
How to scan your car for a tracking device with your phone?
While smartphones are of no use when it comes to regular GPS trackers, they can be useful for checking if you are being tracked by AirTags and other Bluetooth-powered trackers without your knowledge.
Both Apple and Android phones can be used to detect these kinds of trackers. When you click on the notification on your Apple phone, the Find My app reveals where you first picked the tracker. But this function requires users to enable location services, Bluetooth, and other settings before the phone generates the notification.
Alternatively, you can use the Tracker Detect app from Android’s Google Play store or the Scan & Secure feature from Tile’s iOS AND Android apps store. Both the Tracker Detect app and the Scan & Secure feature will enable you to see the unwanted Bluetooth-powered trackers you’ve picked while out and about.

Who can check my car for a tracking device?
If you are not sure you can find an unwanted GPS spotter on your own, there are several options, such as:
- Private investigators
- Mechanics
- Security service providers
Will police help find a tracker?
If you suspect that your vehicle has been bugged, it’s only natural that you will want to get the authorities involved; and why not? Installation of GPS spotters without the subject’s say-so is an unlawful invasion of privacy, after all.
However, there are some considerations to keep in mind before involving the local police department. The police usually require solid evidence before they get involved, and even then, they may still get tripped up by workload issues and resource constraints, forcing them to prioritize other serious crimes above your case.
Additionally, most police officers don’t have the equipment or training to conduct thorough bug sweeps. Worse still, there’s the fact that these kinds of searches require a warrant which might not be easy for the police to obtain. Now the question is whether the police can help me find a tracker in my car. The answer is no, but a private investigator can.
That being said, there are situations where it’s better to get the police involved:
- Domestic violence. If you suspect that your partner or ex-partner is using a GPS spotter to track your movements, take the safe step and let the police get involved before the person does damage to you. The police will be willing to investigate, especially if you have a restraining order.
- Dealing with a stalker. It’s always best to file a police report if you believe you are being stalked. Getting the situation on record can be helpful if you decide to pursue legal action later.
- Evidence of a crime. If you happen to come across a tracker by chance or during a DIY bug sweep, call the police and let them carry out their investigation to see if some form of crime is being carried out. A police investigation can help sniff out the culprit.
Will professionals help find a tracker?
If, for one reason or the other, you can’t rely on the police to help, then working with private investigators to sniff out unlawfully installed trackers is your best option. As private investigators, we have advanced bug sweep equipment and tried true-tested methods to sniff out all kinds of trackers.
We offer a thorough and discreet way to confirm your suspicions and even find out who bugged you in the first place. Some of the popular places we check include:
- Undercarriage. The perimeter of the underside, gas tank, and anywhere else people like to stash these magnetic devices
- Under the plastic guards and behind the tires
- Front and rear bumpers
- The roof, especially in cases involving SUVs and other tall vehicles
- Inside the retraction slot of sunroofs
- Under the hood
- Inside the upholstery
- Beneath the seats and carpet
- Inside the glovebox compartment and the panel beneath the steering wheel
- Inside the trunk
- Underneath the rear window
- Underneath the spare tire
Real talk, when you are behind the wheels of your car, you are in charge of your destination. But thanks to hush-hush GPS tracking devices, you may never know if your car is being followed.
Hidden trackers are easy to purchase on the cheap and are frequently used by individuals such as business competitors, employers, jealous spouses, suspicious spouses, ex-partners, and stalkers who want to keep track of their subject’s locations at all times.
Unlawful installation of GPS tracking devices is an invasion of privacy. If we discover hidden bugs in your car, we can prepare evidence for you to use to pursue legal action. Get in touch with our expert investigators today, and let us get you started on the journey to feeling safe.
