What are the requirements to become a private investigator?
What kind of training and education are needed?
How does one go about getting started in this career field?
This is a simple, straightforward process based on the state in which you reside. Each state has a department/bureau that handles the licensing process. Please note that without a license, your success is probably zero. You may start with the “Bureau of Security and Investigative Services” in your state. Ask for the licensing packet to be sent to you. Upon receipt, review the requirements for taking the examination.
The information packet will contain the training and education requirements. Some of these requirements are important because they will shorten the time needed to obtain a license.
For the record, there are five states that currently do not require a license:
1.) Alaska
2.) Idaho
3.) Mississippi
4.) South Dakota
5.) Wyoming
Be diligent with these, as some have pending laws to establish licensing requirements. Interestingly, Alaska and Wyoming have some licensing requirements at the local level.
